History of J. H. Cutler

Our sister company J. H. Cutler is Australia’s, and one of the world’s, leading bespoke tailors and shirt makers. Founded in 1884, it has provided bespoke tailoring and shirt making services to discerning gentlemen throughout Australia and across the world for over 125 years.

Throughout this time leading identities from Federal and State politics, country families, business, the law, medicine, diplomacy and entertainment have enjoyed the benefits of skills based on the great traditions of England’s Savile Row, as four generations of the Cutler family have assiduously maintained the exacting standards, the quality, the cut, the style and the fit that has made their name synonymous with exclusive clothing.

It was current business principal’s John Cutler’s great-grandfather Joseph Handel Cutler who founded the business at 70 King Street in 1884. The son of an English migrant who had arrived in Ballarat during the time of the Victorian Gold Rush, he was the first member of his family to take up the tailor’s shears when he moved to Sydney to become a tailor’s apprentice.

As J. H. Cutler, and Sydney, grew and prospered the business moved to Bligh Street, close to Sydney’s gentlemen’s clubs and in the heart of the financial district where it was to remain for more than 70 years. In 1932 the company purchased a terraced house at 7 Bligh Street, and it was during this time that the company began making clothing for Sydney’s elite.

By this time Joseph’s son Leslie Frederick Cutler was managing the business, and he was joined by his son Bruce who took charge when he returned from serving in New Guinea at the end of the Second World War.

In turn one of his son’s John Handel Lawson Cutler joined the family business are completing his education at Sydney Grammar. Following in the footsteps of his father and grand father before him he spent time in London learning the trade and studying ‘cutting gentlemen’s tailor made garments’ at the renowned Tailor & Cutter Academy. John took over cutting in 1972 and became business principal upon his father’s retirement in 1976.

In 1988 J. H. Cutler were one of the few Australian businesses honoured by an invitation from the late Lord Lichfield to be featured in the inaugural edition of Courvoisier’s Book of the Best, a bible for stylish international travellers. They also received further accolades, being included in lists compiled in the United States of the world’s ten best tailors.
